Antonio Fazio (* 11 October 1936 in Alvito, province Frosinone) is a former president of the Italian issuing bank Banca d'Italia. He was appointed 1993 on lifetime for this post and was considered as one of the most powerful men of Italy. On 19 December 2005 he communicated his resignation.
To withdraw Fazio several times requested. Also members of the Italian government including Silvio Berlusconi requested it in addition. Even the coworkers of its bank struck against him. Principal reason for it is that Fazio tries to partition the Italian Bankenmarkt against assumptions of foreign competitors. It tried to prevent the assumption of the Banka Antonveneta by the ABN Amro and the Banca Nazionale del Lavoro by the Spanish Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA) by encouraging Italian enterprises to offer also for the two Italian banks and her thereby supported. In latter case the defense with an assumption of the bank by those the insurer university pole.
