As a son of a renowned Frankfurt family Gwinner completed bank teachings, which long foreign stays followed. 1888 became Gwinner of exclusive owners of the banking house Riess & Itzinger in Berlin. 1894 he liquidated however his own banking house, in order to accept a place in the executive committee of the German bank, where he co-operated closely with George von Siemens. It belonged to the executive committee until 1919, of it from 1910 to 1919 as a speaker. From 1919 to 1931 it belonged to the supervisory board of the enterprise.

Gwinner was at the financing of the Bagdad course, which AEG takes part and from Siemens. Due to its foreign experience it was in particular responsible for the foreign business of the German bank and applied so also as German external politicians.

1910 it was appointed by William II. into the Prussian manor-house. In the following it made itself also as an opponent of out bank that national indebtedness a name.

1911 it acquired property and lock Krumke, let it recondition and develop and used it as family seat.
