As a son of a renowned Frankfurt family Gwinner completed bank teachings, which long foreign stays followed. 1888 became Gwinner of exclusive owners of the banking house Riess & Itzinger in Berlin. 1894 he liquidated however his own banking house, in order to accept a place in the executive committee of the German bank, where he co-operated closely with George von Siemens. It belonged to the executive committee until 1919, of it from 1910 to 1919 as a speaker. From 1919 to 1931 it belonged to the supervisory board of the enterprise.
