The asiatic development bank (AsEB, also AsDB; English: Asian development bank (ADB)) a multilateral development bank with seat is in Manila (the Philippines).

History

In March 1965 the economic and social commission for Asia and the Pacific of the United Nations initiated the establishment of a development bank for this area. Already on 5 December 1965 under it Austria in Manila from first 21 states, under it the Federal Republic of Germany at that time, by 31 January 1966 of further nine states, which signs conventions for the establishment of the asiatic development bank, became. This stepped with deposit of the 15. Instrument of acceptance and/or ratification by the Secretary-General of the United Nations on 22 August 1966 into force.

With Armenia as last new acquisition has the AsEB at present (conditions: 30. September 2005) of 64 member countries.

Tasks

The activity of the AsEB is primarily aligned on poverty fight in Asia and the Pacific region by economic development and co-operation. In its strategic outline plan (2001 to 2015) the bank puts the emphasis of its activity on the private sector development, regional co-operation and lasting environmental policy.

For the implementation of its goals the bank loan assigns and transacts financial participation. Although also grantings of credit are possible to the private sector, most loans go to the public range.

Over asiatic Entwicklungsfonds (AsDF) - also the these has Germany along-justified - the bank assigns interest-favorable credits at their poorer regional member countries (see also: Development assistance).

Organization

Each member country designates a member and its deputies for board of directors (board OF Governors) of the bank. This selects the board of directors (board OF Directors), consisting of twelve members and their deputy. From them eight represent the Asia Pacific region, while further four originate from other regions of the world. Also the president (President) of the bank is selected by the board of directors for one term of office of five years, its re-election is possible. The president manages the board of directors and is subjected in the management of the bank its instructions; traditionally Japanese is always selected into this office. Japan is one of the largest shareholders of the bank.

Representative office offices are maintained approximately around the globe, one of it in Frankfurt/Main. World-wide the bank has approx. 2,000 persons employed from approximately 50 countries, of it is more than half of Philippinos.
