August Belmont (* 8 December 1816 in Alzey; " 24 November 1890 in New York, NY) was a German-American banker and politician.
As a representative Frankfurt banking houses of the Rothschild in the USA Belmont resettled 1837 to New York. There it acquired the US-American nationality and married Caroline Perry, the daughter of the naval officer Matthew Perry.
In the year 1844 Belmont was appointed the Consul General of Austria in New York. From protest against those its view after cruel policy of Austria against Hungary it withdrew 1850 from this office. In the following years it served as of d'affaires of the USA into the Hague and as US-American envoys.
As delegates took it 1860 at the Democratic national Convention, with which it supported the democratic presidency candidate Stephen A. Douglas. In the same year he was selected in Baltimore to the chairman of the Democratic national Committee. This office stopped he until 1872.
During the American civil war was Belmont of glowing advocates of the interests of the unionists and exerted strong influence on the buyers and Finanziers from England and France.
August Belmont died 1890 at the age of 73 years. In the same year Letters appeared, to Speeches and Addresses OF August Belmont a composition of his letters and speeches under the title.
After Belmont, which was an inspired sport trailer, the renowned horse running Belmont Stakes is designated.
