Its father August baron of the Heydt deceased early. To bank teachings in Berlin it returned again to Elberfeld, in order to work in the banking house of the Heydt, Kersten & sons, where it became 1878 partners. Two years later he married Selma hair house. Its sons, August and Eduard were born 1881 and 1882.

Of the Heydt enjoyed nature and removed the park plants. Numerous monuments were established, so also first, which should honour Heinrich Heine. Together with its wife it acquired a large collection of contemporary art. It was among other things one first, which bought on a large scale works of Paula Modersohn Becker. A part of this collection was given to the Elberfelder museum, which was created 1902 with its assistance. Many pictures of its collection unfortunately burned 1943 after an air raid.

1961 the Elberfelder art museum after it and his son Eduard renamed in of that Heydt museum.
