Benedikt Moses Baruch Goldschmidt (* around 1575 in Frankfurt (Main); "† 1642 in Kassel), as a protection Jew in joke living (1618 - 1622) and in Kassel (starting from 1620) mention, yard banker of three hessian land counts (Moritz, William V. and William VI.) and Hofjuwelier, first chief the national Jew shank (starting from 1625).

Life

Benedikt Goldschmidt from Frankfurt principal firms "„to the golden swan "“(of 1521 - 1883 in family estate) pulls approximately around 1602, anyhow briefly after the turn of the century, as a young man from Frankfurt/Main to joke living, where he of 1618 - 1622 are mentioned, live however probably in the hessian Residenzstadt Kassel, where he is mentioned of 500 Reichstalern already 1620 in the list of the taxpayers as "“a yard Jew"” with a payment. Goldschmidt supplies also around 1620 the Kasseler coin the embossing silver.

It enjoys the full confidence of the land count Moritz of Hessen, who send it for the completion of important business repeated to Frankfurt, and his successor William V.

When one demands 2,000 gold Taler from the Jews as financial contribution to the costs of the war, Benedikt puts as first chiefs the hessian national Jew shank - this office he had taken over of its related Joseph Goldschmidt (of "„the golden swan "“in Frankfurt) and it remained since then to beginning 18. Century in Benedikts descendants hereditary - this sum first out, distribute this demand then however on all Jewish families of upper and down Hessen with the first Jew federal state parliament, which it calls up in the year 1626 to Kassel. In the course of the war it receives a quartering in its house on instruction of the town councillor also, on which it has itself immediately with the land count successfully weighted with the reference, it as a yard civil servant the privilege (for which it paid in 1625 and in 1636 600 Reichstaler), to be released from quartering. On intervention of the land count Benedikt remains released from it.

A crucial chapter of its life and also the Jewish municipality of Kassel is Benedikts controversy of many years with the Rabbiner Isaak from bed living, leader of a group of orthodox Jews, who hold their services in Kassel. The Rabbiner already calls 1622 the rich yard Jew and its family repeated "“grown regents"” and "“betrayer of the Jews"”, there Benedikt - decay probably as world-open and thinking Jewish buyer - as a yard Jew with the government hated in such a way with the orthodox Jews had let itself in. After some arguments Benedikt 1625 wins this controversy, not least also with support of the land count, for who the resource of the Goldschmidt family is appropriate more near than the protection of the orthodox Judentums, and even obtains 1635 a decree for the immediate classification of all Jews with exception of its own family, living in Kassel. Again 1637 this decree are renewed, "“that no Jew except it in Cassel be established, be should"”.

Already in 1631 Goldschmidt had won a controversy against the Christian butcher guild, by the right to ritual slaughtering is entitled to him, although professional activities relating to crafts were forbidden to the Jew. Its victory contributes thus also to facilitate the situation of all Jews in completely Hessen.

With omission of the Jewish municipality in Kassel there is however also no more Jewish place of worship, since at least ten adults service participants must be proven. Thus "“and the physically increasing family Goldschmidt"” verwurzelte ever more strongly accomplishes its "“private-service"” without permission in the own house, whereby also foreign Jews without residence permit come to these services into the city and also stay overnight there. Later the family Goldschmidt can dare years "“with it own the uncompromising energy the attempt to let it (the service) legitimize officially!"” This succeeds however only to 1651 Benedikts son Simon.

The Goldschmidt family remains the most influential under Hessen Hofjuden up to the ascent of the Frankfurt Rothschilds.
