Charles Lazarus resounding garden, (* 18 November 1838 in Mainz; "† 19 April 1908 in Frankfurt/Main), was an GermanUS-American banker, philanthropist and a social reformer.

Resounding garden lived from 1851 to 1875 in New York and was more numerously partially today still founder or joint founder in Frankfurt of existing institutions. During lifetimes he was far a personality well-known beyond Frankfurt, while he is today nearly forgotten.

Life

Mainz - origin and childhood

Charles resounding garden originated from one for centuries in Mainz resident Jewish family. Its parents were the Eleonore resounding garden originating from Mannheim geb. and the businessman Lazarus resounding garden. Charles, as "„a Karl "“registered in the birth book, had two older and two younger Geschwister.Lazarus resounding garden went 1845 or 46 to New York and created the banking house resounding garden & CO. in the barrier Street area. Its family still remained until 1851 in Germany and lived in this time in the house of an uncle in Mannheim.

New York - youth, training, occupation and marriage

Starting from 1851 the family lived together in New York. Charles became (and remained) American citizen, visited school and college, concerned themselves with languages and literature, nature and riding. During the American civil war (1861 - 1865) it represented the position of the north states as decided opponents of the slavery. 1864 he married its cousin Elise Mainzer, 1865 the first son (Fritz) was born, 1869 the daughter Henriette and 1870 the son Robert.Charles became 1868 partners of the paternal Bankhauses.Er showed a large interest in social questions and in the organization of private left he with its family New York and the USA, after he had been infected with Tuberkulose, probably by its attendance in slum areas. He remained quiet partner of the banking house.

Frankfurt - charity as occupation

Work

Properties were acquired, built settlements. The ABG developed to the largest and most active non-profit building association; many hundred dwellings at reasonable prices including infrastructure (association house, people kitchen, child strongholds, playgrounds etc.) developed.

Further its activities in the area of the woman promotion were important: On Charles of resounding garden operation and with its financial support in Frankfurt the first legal protection place for women was furnished and the first Juristin in Germany was employed. It supported the Frauenrechtlerin Bertha pasteboard home and was joint founder of an association, which helped single pregnant women.

Personality

One of the reasons for it that Charles resounding garden is to a large extent forgotten in Frankfurt, lies reliably in its personal modesty. To be praised was obviously not important to it. He dressed no public offices, but worked almost exclusively as a Privatmann.
