The Citigroup resulted in October 1998 from the fusion of the Citicorp and the Travelers Group. Thus developed based on the market capitalization the largest Finanzdienstleister of the world.

According to own data the Citigroup end had 2000 more than 120 million customer in the private customer business and about 230,000 coworkers.

The profit of the Citigroup amounted to in the year 2000 13.5 billion $. In the year 2003 there was according to mirror EUR 14.2 billion net profit. That is more than the net profits 2003 of Merrill Lynch, BNP Paribas and JP Morgan together amounts to.

The insurance company Travelers was separated later again than independent company and belonged today the pc. Pauls Travelers insurance.

The fusion of the Citicorp and Travelers Group was advanced by Sandy Weill, the CEO at that time of the Travelers Group. First the Citigroup was led by Sanford Weill and John Reed, the CEO at that time of the Citicorp, together. However John Reed was forced already very soon to the resignation. By 1 October 2003 Sandy Weill was then exclusive CEO of the Citigroup. Chuck Prince became the successor of Sandy Weill as CEO, which is this very day Chairman OF the board/Director of the Citigroup.
