Lyonnais (short: LCL) is a major bank, which is resident in the city Lyon.

History

The bank was created by Henri Germain on 6 July 1863. Together with BNP the Lyonnais belongs Paribas and Gnrale to the three oldest French business banks ("„les trois vieilles "“).

1870 opened the bank their first address outside of the country in London. 1876 were opened the first address in Paris, which became to 1913 the head office of the bank. 1880 occupied the Lyonnais with 23 addresses in Paris and Dependencen in London, Geneva, Konstantinopel and Alexandria first rank under the French banks. 1900 occupied the Lyonnais that world-wide first rank by the balance volume under the business banks.

During the 1990er years stood the bank in the center of numerous financial scandals, which contributed to its deficit of approx. FF 150 billion (almost "€ 23 billion). By risky Investments and problems were caused at subsidiaries of the bank. The slogan of the bank in that time read: "“Le pouvoir de dire oui"” (= the ability to say). Apparently she said actually a few marks "„too often "“.

Participation

From 1993 to 2000 the bank was involved and thus in Germany present in the BfG bank.

The Lyonnais possessed the American MGM Filmstudios a few years, in which Giancarlo Parretti Studiochef was.

Disaster

During a fire to 5. May 1996 was destroyed a large part that Paris head office. The fire began in main switch-resounds to the bank and was one of the most devastating fires, which destroyed a building in Paris during the last 25 years. It burned sensitive bank archives and the computer data over 12 hours and two-thirds of the building was destroyed and with it.

Bank finances were saved to the Consortium de (CDR) from the disaster by misalignment of its credits and obligations into a new state-own society. The CDR explained itself ready to pay 525 millions to the California department OF Insurance in order to prevent a law case over the insurance scandal with Executive Life. The CDR is a controversy establishment, because many the opinion are, which should not have helped French government the bank from the clamp.

The French reporter Denis Robert and the number 3 of Clearstream, Ernest Backes published 2001 a book with the title "„Revelation "“(= exposure), in which they accused of Lyonnais as well as other banks of unpublizierter accounts with Clearstream. The authors accuse of Clearstream, a Luxemburger Clearingstelle, a kind more largely of being international money washing machine which would equal a financial scandal.

Owner

1946 were nationalized the Lyonnais a first time, 1982 a second time.

Since 1999 the shares are acted freely at the stock exchange. 50% were in strewing possession, 33% belonged to a group of large investor, 10% the French state and the remainder the employee and the Lyonnais Group.

2003 were taken over Lyonnais by the Agricole. Its was transferred Agricole Indosuez, which was renamed in Calyon to an existing subsidiary by the Agricole. The Lyonnais continues to exist as national Teilzahlungskreditinstitut.

2005 were renamed Lyonnais in Le Lyonnais (LCL) to probably reduce in order obvious memories to its recent problematic past. At the same time CDR had to pay "€ 135 millions back to the former disputed billionaire Berne pool of broadcasting corporations Tapie (or better at its creditors) because of a scandal in connection with its temporary assumption of Adidas.

In the USA Lyonnais is well-known as Calyon, whereas in France Lyonnais and Agricole as to some extent separate units remain existing. In the USA the Calyon Investment bank maintains five branches in New York town center, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles and Houston. Calyon Houston is specialized in the key financing of the energy sector.

The Belgian Lyonnais was sold at Deutsche Bank.

The very salient firm head office in the east of the city Lyon becomes because of its form crayon (frz. for pencil) mentioned.

Sponsor

Lyonnais is in particular by its activity as a main sponsor in the club route de France world-wide well-known, from its firm colors maillot jaune (= yellow leotard) developed and the emblems of the bank carries.
