The Debeka group with seat in Koblenz on the Rhine is one of the ten largest groups of insurance in Germany. 2005 amounted to the customer master 5.9 million Versicherte. The enterprise was created on 2 July 1905 as "“patient relief fund for the municipality officials of the Rhine province"”. The Debeka is still an according to professional status self-help mechanism of the public service, is however meanwhile for all citizens opened.

To 1 January 1928 a change of name took place into "“German official health insurance cooperative insurance company on mutuality seat Koblenz on the Rhine before times health insurance company for the municipality officials and - employees of the German Reich"”. From that in each case first two initial letters of the words German officials Kasse later the today's name Debeka developed.

The group offers a various insurance and financial service offer.

The entrepreneurial group consists of the following enterprises:

• Health insurance association on mutuality (since 1905)
• Life insurance association on mutuality (since 1947)
• Building society corporation (since 1974)
• General insurance corporation (since 1981)
• Debeka staff sickness fund (BKK Debeka) (since 1995)
• Prorente Debeka pension management GmbH (since 1995)
• Pension fund corporation (since 2002)

The two largest enterprises of the group, the ill and life insurance, are led in the legal form of the cooperative insurance company on mutuality. The remaining finance companies are daughters of the two cooperative insurance companies, so that all yields the club members come again to property and are not given to shareholders.

At the end of November to 2005 employed the Debeka entrepreneurial group of 14,210 coworkers, of it 1,228 training and counted with 663 again created jobs to the ten largest job procuring parties 2003 in Germany.

The existence of contracts amounted 2004 to over 12 million pieces, of it 3.7 million health insurances. The contribution and/or receipt volume was with 8.8 billion "€. The Debeka health insurance association a.G. is the largest private health insurance of Germany.

To the philosophy of the Debeka it belongs to deal with the means of the members as economically as possible which comes for example in the renouncement of mediale advertisement to the expression. This cost-conscious behavior comes in an administrative expense ratio very low in the industry comparison (2004: 1.6%) to the expression.
