Biography

Dr. Eduard baron of the Heydt worked before the First World War as a banker in London.

1920 - 1939

Of the Heydt married the daughter citizens of Berlin of the banker Dr. Hans von and opened 1920 in Amsterdam as agency of the banking house S. and other banking houses the Heydt Kerstens bank AG. Thus it became among other things the banker of the still wealthy emperor Wilhelm II. during its exile in Holland as well as the Stinnes company. By doubtful financial transactions it lost the confidence of its Jewish father-in-law, which drew the dissolution of the bank. Of the Heydt turned now to right-conservative and anti-Semitic circles. 1926 it became member steel helmet and from 1933 to 1938 was it member of the NSDAP. He bought the Monte to 1926 with Ascona in the Tessin, made him its domicile and acquired 1937 Swiss nationality.

The Second World War

During the time of the national socialism and the Second World War ran over the accounts from the Heydts financial transfers for the counter-espionage of the German armed forces. Furthermore it was active for the Devisenbeschaffung of the German Reich. In addition it was involved as a Swiss representative of the August Thyssen bank along-created of it into the robbery gold business "„of the third realm "“. Post-war period

After the war he handed his East Asian art collection of the city Zurich to 1946 over as basic stick for the museum guessing mountain. Its painting collection it bequeathed starting from 1952 to the urban museum Wuppertal, which means since 1961 of that Heydt museum. Since 1950 "„culture price of the city Wuppertal expenditure-praised "“1957 in "„Eduard of the Heydt Kulturpreis "“was renamed.

Due to the support "„of the third realm "“through the Heydt demand critics a renaming of the museum after that 1933 emigrierten Jewish painter Jankel eagle (1895-1949). Proponents of this demand were indicated during a Symposions for the hundred-year anniversary of the museum in October 2002 by the museum line because of Hausfriedensbruchs.

On 31 January 2006 the chairman of the Else Lasker pupil society, Hajo Jahn pleaded, to rename on the occasion of the award "„Rheinlandtalers "“in the city hall Wuppertal, the Eduard of the Heydt Kulturpreis the city in Else Lasker pupil price. This price is not to be confounded however with the dramatist price of the same name. Support received Jahn meanwhile from former Eduard from the Heydt such as Helmut Hirsch, Peter Wolf Erlbruch as well as the Else Lasker pupil Elfriede Jelinek and pure Kunze.
