Ernst Welteke (* 21 August 1942 in basket oh) is German SPD politician and political economist. He was from 1999 to 2004 a president of the German Federal Bank.

Life

The learned agricultural machinery mechanic acquired his Abitur over the second Bildungsweg on the wiesbadener Hessenkolleg and studied afterwards national economy in Marburg and Frankfurt/Main. Its political career began the diploma political economist in the local government policy (as circle tag delegate and a SPD chairman in the Hochtaunuskreis) and since 1972 as a coworker of the hessian Prime Minister Albert Osswald.

1974 it became member of the hessian federal state parliament, to which it belonged until 1995. Since 1984, the beginning of the first Red-Greens coalition, Welteke with a short interruption (of April 1987 up to the resignation from Hans Krollmann in February 1988) was a chairman of the SPD federal state parliament faction.

With the new edition of red-green in Hessen 1991 Welteke changed as a minister of economics into the cabinet of Prime Minister Hans Eichel. After the resignation from Annette Fugmann Heesing as a financial minister, due to the Lotto affair, took over Welteke 1994 the financial department.

1995 became Welteke - on suggestion of its political way companion of many years acorn - the president of the state central bank in Hessen. In this time Welteke convinced numerous critics, who had doubted during its appointment whether a professional politician of many years had the necessary specialized authority for this office.

On 1 September 1999 Welteke - again by the employment of Hans Eichel, which was meanwhile Federal Minister of Finance - became a president of the German Federal Bank and began thereby the follow-up of Hans Tietmeyer. In this characteristic it represented also the interests of the Federal Bank in the advice of the European central bank.

Adlon affair

At the beginning of of April 2004 published the news magazine of the mirrors of tax vouchers of the Dresdens bank over the cost notes of a Berlin attendance Weltekes to the citizen of Berlin ceremonies in the evening of the euro-cash introduction. On 6 April the Frankfurt public prosecutor's office introduced a preliminary investigation because of the suspicion of an advantage acceptance, starting from which 7 April left Welteke on recommendation of the executive committee of the Federal Bank its offices to rest. InterCIM chairman became strong. Its successor became Professor Dr. Axel weber.

Resignation

On 16 April 2004 Welteke laid down its office, with which the Adlon affair in such a way specified found its provisional end. The resignation was caused obviously also by searches of the pool of broadcasting corporations, after which the political economist as well as its wife had followed in June 2003 of an invitation of the BMW company to the Formel-1-Rennen to Monaco and the travel costs themselves had only taken over. To the company, which confirmed the information meanwhile, also the BMW bank belongs, across which Welteke had to lead as President of the Federal Bank supervision. After the Pool of broadcasting corporations Hauptstadtstudio in the morning 16. April at the Federal Bank for statement, communicated the bank had asked the resignation Weltekes in the evening.

Bank Zentr Invest

Ernst Welteke became in June 2005 independent member board of the OF Directors of the bank Zentr Invest in Rostow at the Don. The southRussian bank Zentr Invest was created 1992 and lies with active of scarcely 10 billion rouble (nearly 290 millions euro) at place 85 in Russia. Largest single shareholder is the European bank for reconstruction and development (EBWE), whose portion amounts to according to different data between 20,4 and 25,2 per cent.
