The European system of the central banks (ESZB) consists of the European central bank (EZB) and the national central banks (NZBen) of all states of the European Union. In the context of the third stage of the European economic and monetary union was introduced on 1 January 1999. Bases were the statutes of the European central bank, the European system of the central banks and the contract for the establishment of the European community.

The primary goal of the ESZB is the guarantee of the price stability; A secondary goal is the support of the general economic policy in the European union.

Tasks of the ESZB:

  • the monetary policy of the community specify
  • Foreign exchange transactions accomplish
  • the official currency reserves of the member states hold and administer
  • a functioning of the Zahlungssysteme promote
  • the national authorities with the state supervision of the banks advise

The 'ESZB differs from the euro system. To the euro system belong only the EZB and the NZBen of the states, which introduced the euro.
