By an investment company, also Kapitalanlagegesellschaften (KAG), one understands an institution (mostly in form of a GmbH or an AG), which spends portion lights to the public. That for example fund portions can be. The incomes obtained from this sales are used for the purchase of a Portfolios from securities (e.g. shares and loans, real estates). If the value of the Portfolios rises, then the owner of the fund portions profits. If it sinks, then it carries the losses. One speaks of unit trust fund.
