The kreditanstalt fuer wiederaufbau (KfW bankers' syndicate and/or KfW) is German Kreditinstitut. It was created after the Second World War on 16 December 1948 with the goal of financing the reconstruction of the German economy. The starting capital originated particularly from means of the Mars resounding plan.

Today the capital of the kreditanstalt fuer wiederaufbau is held to four fifth by the Federal Republic of Germany and to a fifth by the Lands of the Federal Republic. The Federal Republic is responsible for all commitments and credits of the kreditanstalt fuer wiederaufbau. The balance sheet total of the KfW amounted to 1980 approx. 28 billion euro, on 31 December 2004 328.6 billion euro (for the entire company).

Apart from the execution of advancement programs in Germany the KfW is today also responsible for the financial co-operation (FZ) of the Federal Republic of Germany with developing countries. It is the volume after the most important instrument development co-operation. In the year 2002 the KfW from the BMZ household 970 millions euro for the FZ were assured. Since the German reunification the kreditanstalt fuer wiederaufbau moved it due to tasks closed up thereby in the reconstruction of the East German economics again more strongly into the focus of the public interest.

Main location of the KfW is Frankfurt/Main, in addition branches exist in Berlin and Bonn. There about 3300 coworkers are busy. In the KfW Bankgruppe work approx. 3,800 coworkers (2003). Executive committee, board of directors and a consulting committee for the middle class promotion are organs of the KfW.

Tasks

In different advancement programs for tied financings credit means are made available. In addition belong

  • Support of the federation with public tasks, for example enterprise privatisations (German post office AG, German Telekom AG)
  • Investments of the commercial economy to the protection of water, air and soil and to economical handling energy
  • Financings for modernization and environmentalfair reorganization of houses and dwellings
  • interest-favorable granting of credit for the out and further training of the population
  • independent refinancing of the conveyances at the capital market
  • Business startups, e.g. over own capital funds aid programme and structure financings
  • Export promotion

History

The meaning of the institute for the reconstruction of Germany after 1945 is investigated by historical archives of the KfW (KfW, historical archives, Charlottenstr. 33, 10117 Berlin).
