The national insurance offices (LVA) were carriers of the legal old age pension insurance that dependently employed workers as well as that legally statutory insuree independent craftsman, manufacturing one, coastal Fischer and - boat operators.

The LVA granted legal pension and rehablitation achievements as well as contributions for the ill and nursing care insurance of the pensioners. The LVA was nationaldirect legally responsible bodies of the public right (authorities with seal guidance power) with autonomous household and fortune guidance. The LVA was established for the first time 1892; existed until 30 September 2005 22 regionally responsible LVA.

Starting from 1 October 2005 the legal old age pension insurance was again regulated. The national insurance offices are now as regional level part of the new organization German old age pension insurance; they remain however independent carriers, so that the statements about their internal organization have further validity. Weitern the number of national insurance offices is to be drastically lowered. So already fusions are planned (partially already to 1 October 2005):

• the LVA'en Freie-und Hanseatic city Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania becomes the LVA north (German old age pension insurance north) with head office in Luebeck
• The LVA'en Hanover and Braunschweig becomes the LVA Braunschweig Hanover with head office in Laatzen (with Hanover)
• The LVA'en Brandenburg and Berlin becomes the LVA Berlin Brandenburg (German old age pension insurance Berlin Brandenburg)
• The LVA'en Saxonia, Saxonia-Anhalt and Thuringia becomes the LVA Central Germany (German old age pension insurance Central Germany) with head office in Leipzig
• A possible fusion of the five Bavarian LVA'en is angedacht also, is not decided however yet.
