The Nederlandse Handelmaatschappij (NHM) is one of the forerunner companies of the Netherlands bank company ABN AMRO.

History

On decree of king Willem I. was created 1824 the Nederlandse Handelmaatschappij, in order to revive the hand LG1 drawings between the Netherlands and Netherlands India. Starting from 1870 the NHM expanded its business field also since banking transactions. Successively 1826 became an office in Batavia (Jakarta), 1858 an agency in Singapore, 1888 an agency in Penang, 1889 one agency in Hong Kong and 1920 agencies in Bombay (Mumbai) and Calcutta (Kolkata) opens, whereby the two latters served predominantly for the support of customers in the diamond trade.

With the opening of an agency in Jidda (Saudi Arabia) there the first and commercial bank of the kingdom only to 1948 originated in to 1926. Customers of the branch were of Muslim Indonesian in particular, which were in the context of its Hadsch on the way after Mekka.

1941 opened the NHM an office in New York, 1948 an agency in carat ski. Thus the NHM was the first foreign bank, which received a license for banking transactions from the new government of Pakistan. In Suriname the NHM acquired 1949 De Surinaam bank. In addition it 1951 agencies in Mombasa and it Salam and 1954 in Beirut and Kampala.

1960 put the Indonesian government under state control the Indonesian branch of the NHM and formed out of it the bank Ekspor Impor Indonesia, now bank Mandiri.

The NHM shifted 1963 their company headquarters in Malaysia to Kuala Lumpur. A year later united it with De Twent bank to the Algemene bank Nederland (ABN).
