The NORD/LB - Kurzbezeichung for north German Landesbank - Girozentrale - is Kreditinstitut (bank) in the legal form of a common legally responsible institute of the public right of the German Lands of the Federal Republic Lower Saxony and Saxonia-Anhalt. The NORD/LB is at the same time Girozentrale for the savings banks in Lower Saxony, Saxonia-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The bank has its seat in Hanover, Braunschweig and Magdeburg. Beyond that it maintains an address in resounds (Saale). The NORD/LB was by 19 July 2005 also Landesbank for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

History

The NORD/LB was formed 1970 by the union of the up to then independent financial establishments Landesbank of Lower Saxony - Girozentrale -, Braunschweigi state bank 9 including Braunschweigi national savings bank, Hannover national loan corporation and housing loan corporation of Lower Saxony - city shank -. The bank is total right successor of these institutes. The bank is not however right successor of the earlier Central German Landesbank - Girozentrale for the province Saxonia, Thuringia and notion - with seat in Magdeburg.

The history of the institutes for predecessor goes back into the year 1765, in which the Leyhaus in Braunschweig von Herzog Karl I. was created by Braunschweig. The Hannover national loan corporation was created 1840 for the financing of predominantly agricultural enterprises. 1918 follow the establishment the city shank for the province Hanover as Institut for the supply of loans for urban housebuilding.

In the old duchy Braunschweig, which hands Holzminden from the wolf castle, over Braunschweig, Helmstedt, Salzgitter, Seesen until, notices the NORD/LB as only Landesbank parallel, in form of the special department "“Braunschweigi national savings bank"”, also the savings bank function.

In the course of the German reunification the bank became the Landesbank and Girozentrale for the Lands of the Federal Republic Saxonia-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The country Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania separated however on 19 July 2005 from the working group to the NORD/LB. Since separating the country Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania the NORD/LB in this Land of the Federal Republic exercises no more Landesbank function. The former seat of the bank in Schwerin has since then only the status of an address.

Today the NORD/LB belongs to the large credit institutes in Germany. Addresses in many parts of the world will maintain: New York, Singapore, Shanghai, London, Helsinki and others beside it maintains the bank subsidiaries in Luxembourg and Switzerland. The Eastern Europe business with the daughters NORD/LB Polska (Poland), NORD/LB Lietuva (Lithuania) and NORD/LB Latvija (Latvia) was brought into a Joint venture with the Norwegian bank DNB NOR. At again created Institut with name DNB NORTH holds the NORD/LB 49%. Furthermore to the company belong of Bremen the Landesbank, the public insurance Braunschweig, the NORDCON, the NORD/IT as well as the north getting thing. The NORD/LB possesses a 25%-Beteiligung at the Berenberg bank.
