The realm bank was the central bank of the German Reich.
With the establishment of the German Reich 1871 the note and monetary law giving were incumbent on this. Thus the Mark was introduced as new currency in the German Reich. In addition became on 1 January 1876 in accordance with law of 14. March 1875 the German realm Reich by assumption of the Prussian bank as central issuing bank with seat in Berlin and legally responsible public institute based. It was subordinate at the beginning of directly the realm chancellor and had a board of directors, whose president was appointed by the emperor on suggestion the Upper House of Parliament. Their task was it to determine price and volume of the money. The note-issuing privilege remained provisional still on the realm bank (250 million M) and 32 private issuing banks (135 million M) distributes. Until 1889 had done to 19 of it without their note issue privilege. 1906 had only the four large national issuing banks of bathing, Bavaria, Saxonia and their right of issuing notes, which ended only to 1935. The spent notes had to be covered with the realm bank. The contingent exceeding note issues was to be paid duty with 5 per cent.
1924 became the realm bank according to the Dawesplan an institute independent of the realm government. The choice of the realm bank president took place via the general council, consisting of 14 members, from it sieved foreign. The realm president had only confirmation rights. Besides the realm Mark was introduced as new currency. After the seizure of power by the national socialists 1933 the general council was eliminated, the realm president alone appointed and dismissed the president as well as the members of the board of directors.
Starting from 1937 the realm bank was subordinate again to the realm government, starting from 1939 directly the "leader and realm chancellor" Adolf Hitler, who could grant thereby even the credits to the realm. In addition 1939 renaming took place into German realm Reich. After the Second World War the German realm Reich heard to exist on.
