The state bank 9 of the GDR was the central bank of the former German ones Democratic Republic. It came out on 1 January 1968 from the German issuing bank and took over to the majority the same tasks.
To the tasks among other things the competence for the exchange and control of the money circulation belonged to the state bank 9 of the GDR within the GDR, as well as the exchange in Ausland.Ausserdem administered, bought and sold the bank of securities, precious metals The state bank 9 was responsible also for the account processing of the state institutions and the state-owned enterprises. In each of the 15 districts of the GDR the state bank 9 had at least one main branch.
Citizens of the GDR in the possession of DM foreign exchange were, could with the state bank 9 of the GDR a DM foreign exchange account furnish. This account was per annum paid interest on over the nationally determined interest rate of 3,25% per annum with 4,25%. The availability of the foreign exchange was however going by made more difficult that the owner of an account only limited on 15,00 DM per day for west journeys bar could take its fortune off. Bar orders were not possible further. Orders for goods over the GENEX gift service GmbH were possible. But the gene ex catalog was lent at short notice against proof.
The special, political dependence of the state bank 9 fixed with a law from 19 December 1974 is remarkable, according to which the president of the bank belonged to the Council of Ministers at the same time. The state bank 9 was organ of the Council of Ministers of the GDR. The instruction bindingness of the central bank head is present however also in other states.

After the turn the bank was completed by the trust establishment and taken over parts of other banks. The building of the state bank 9 became after 1990 occasionally citizen of Berlin the head office of the Dresdens bank. Since 2004 it is converted to the luxury hotel "hotel de Rome" of the hotel chain by Sir Rocco Forte, which is to be opened in September 2006.

The state bank 9 of the GDR was at the same time created member with the international bank for economic co-operation (IBWZ), as RGW organ 1957 with seat in Moscow. Their currencies were transfer roubles and gold reserves.
