The Swedish realm bank (on Swedish: Sveriges Riksbank) is the central bank of Sweden. It is an authority of Swedish Reichstag.

The realm bank is led by a management, that consists of six members. The Direktionsmitglieder become from the realm bank committee (schwed. ) for six years selected, whereby a member is selected annually. The 11 members of the realm bank committee are selected of Reichstag, whereby the composition of the committee reflects the political composition of Reichstag.

The Swedish realm bank has the exclusive responsibility for the Swedish monetary policy, but not for the monetary policy. The general guidelines for the monetary policy are met by the government, the realm bank are however responsible for their conversion. The realm bank has also the monopoly on the emission of notes and coins. In the execution of its tasks the realm bank is independent and may entgegegennehmen no instructions.

History

The Swedish realm bank is the oldest still existing central bank of the world. The Swedish realm bank resulted from the assumption of the 1656 of Johan Palmstruch created Palmstruch bank or Stockholm bank. The bank of Palmstruch got 1656 the right to publish notes. Due to a over emission starting from 1661 the bank went 1668 into bankruptcy and by the Swedish Reichstag was transferred, in order to repair the confidence to the banking.

The publication of notes was carefully again taken up only 1701. In 19. Century was permitted also private banks to publish notes which were redeemable against realm bank lights however. 1897 got the realm bank the monopoly on the emission of notes, and from 1904 on only more the notes of the realm bank than currencies applied. Thus the realm bank transferred also control of the monetary policy to Sweden.
