Universalbanken, also full banks mentioned, are credit institutes, which offer the entire range of the bank and financial service business contrary to special institutes, as they are defined for German banks in the credit system law. In addition belong among other things

  • national and international exchange and foreign exchange transaction
  • Inserting or
  • Credit or lending business
  • Dealing in real estate and switching
  • Investment and security business
  • Switching not own financial services (e.g. Insurance, leasing, Factoring)
  • Additional service (e.g. Investment advice, administration of an estate)

The Universalbanken are anxious to offer an all financial offer and to intensify thus the customer connections to make steadier and CROSS Selling business to use be able and so the yield per customer increase. Also for the ever more intensively becoming consulting need (in particular regarding those increasingly more frequently judicially in-complained adhesion for correct and complete advisory activities) it is from use to have all finances of a customer in the view in order to be able to advise it so completely.

Practically the universal bank principle is realized by the fact that all special bank achievements (exchange, active and Investmentbanking, etc.) in the enterprise are realized and/or as outsourcing achievements like own achievements are offered. Non-bank achievements are furnished as switching achievements for other Finanzdienstleister. Organizational this can by co-operation, by bought or even created subsidiary companies (e.g. DWS investment company is a daughter of the German bank AG) or via more complex company structures (e.g. the buying up of the Dresdens bank AG by the alliance AG) take place.

The business of the Universalbanken can be divided in:

  1. the lending business or loan business: Bank overdrafts, discount credits, credits by way of bank guarantee, investment loans, construction financings, credits on real property
  2. the for raising of funds: Insert business (e.g. Savings accounts, time deposits), bank debentures
  3. Services: Exchange, cash business, transfers, collecting transactions, foreign exchange transactions, document business in the foreign trade
  4. as security business: Verwahrung and administration, emissions, on and sales of securities, administration of an estate
  5. Other services: Switching of other financial service products (life insurances etc.), real estate business, advisory activities, expenditure of credit cards and traveler's cheques

German universal credit institutes are for example:

  • Deutsche Bank AG
  • HypoVereinsbank AG
  • Dresden bank AG
  • Commerzbank AG
  • Postal bank
  • Savings banks
  • Landesbank
  • Loan banks

The universal bank principle is not to be found in the whole world. In numerous states (e.g. The USA, Great Britain) are to be found predominantly special credit institutes. This is because of the fact that the universal bank principle from supervision-legal view in these states is regarded as very critical and problematic, because as a result of the different divisions substantial interest conflicts can arise. For example if an enterprise completes its loan business, its exchange, its investments and its stock exchange course over a Universalbank, the question arises whether the bank may use the knowledge from the various business relation in the context of the investment advice for the share of this enterprise or must, without hurting thereby the interest of the investor and the enterprise.

Banks work due to security needs (like data security and data security) with special information technology, both which the hardware and which concerns the software.
